Anastasia Salabasheva | IT consultant at Fatum Ltd | Sofia
Name: Anastasia Salabasheva
Age: 34
Education: Computer Science – Master degree
1 Job Orientation
1.1 When did you decide on doing vocational training in IT?
Immediately after I graduated
1.2 Why do you think did you choose this specific education?
Well, let me use this “science fiction” joke – since I was a child, reading science fictions stories, I’d been very impressed by the new technologies – such modern and unpredictable area. So, it was natural to associate them with computers and decided to study computer science.
1.3 Who supported you doing your career decision phase?
The support I got was mainly from my school-mates, fellow-students, as well as friend with similar interests in the related field.
1.4 What is needed to change career counselling?
In order to embark on a change in the career path, one needs strong motivation, as well as a new vision of him/herself.
2 Educational training
2.1 Did your expectations and wishes about the vocational training come true?
Well, some of them came true, but not all, of course. You know, I had a romantic idea about the “artificial intelligence” since I was a child, and when entering the sector, I met the realities. But I suppose that is quite normal.
2.2 What is it what you especially like in your vocational training?
This is definitely one very simple, but important word – the CHALLENGES that I meet almost daily. They give me motivation and impetus to go ahead no matter what the obstacles are.
2.3 Would you choose the same vocational training again?
Definitely yes, but perhaps, I would have also combined it with additional education, namely pedagogic and psychological learning systems in the field, oriented specially towards children. I realize this need now, being a mother, and think that it reflects my point of view on the real life. I think that the MY idea of IT can be presented by the following general equation: PC + Training + KIDS = IT world (unfortunately engross from games).
2.4 You have the chance to do advertisement for your profession. Please give us some good reasons why to choose this job.
It is simple, it can be described with the following few words:
“Interesting work, better remuneration and hard workJ.
One should never have illusions about that – in order to achieve the goals, diligent and hard work is quite important prerequisite.
3 Differences women and men
3.1 Women are still underrepresented in IT profession, why do you think this is the case?
On the basis of my experience and observations, I think that there are two main groups of reasons. The first one is related to women’s underestimation, lack of motivation and the relatively high level of uncertainty. The second one has to do with the prejudice of men. Suppose that you understand what exactly I mean and which the aspects in this treatment are...
3.2 What are some typical prejudices which maybe also appeared to you?
I admit that I also had prejudices regarding a woman working in the ICT sector. One of them was that women are not for that kind of job. It was crucial to overcome it in order to embark on vocational training in this field.
3.3 What would you advice girls who also want to go into IT?
Don’t be scared or embarrassed to compete with men on the ICT market. Remember that you have your own “added value” – you have your ideas, your vision on the issues. Do not underestimate yourselves and be self-confident in your capabilities and skills. But…don’t try to be perfect.
